I have been involved in web development since 1999. One good morning I woke up, resigned my job, and started tackling any and everything “web”. I started out in web graphics, but soon realized I was going around in circles. I had to publish dynamic content, and give my clients the opportunity to update it themselves.

I tried out a couple of web scripting languages, but finally settled on Macromedia Coldfusion – to this day I’m not really sure why. Coldfusion is today owned and supported by Adobe.

ColdFusion is a rapid application development language allowing you to quickly “mock-up” and prototype ideas for web applications. It is not very popular in South Africa, but it is used. I still hope that the numerous open source projects on CFML will allow it to grow market share here.

In my blog I won’t be making a case for Coldfusion, but certainly for anything web related. When I started out in ’99 there was already talk of the ensuing “dot-com bubble” bursting. We had to convince our first clients that the “web” was here to stay and that the “dot-com bust” was purely an economic trend. Today I think that the “bursting of the bubble” was good for the web as a whole. It made people skeptical about it’s potential and future and they didn’t just buy into anything without knowing what they were getting into.

From email to having your own domain and web site was quickly becoming a business necessity, and I advised my client to “start small, and think big”. The web and the internet are communication mediums such as radio and television, with the added benefit of being a two-way street.
